START JOURNAL is a Kampala-based online art publication focused on highlighting contemporary visual art and art stories happening on the African continent today.
Originally centred on the arts and culture scene in East Africa, START Journal was founded in 2007 with its first four editions being print publications (2007-2010) after which the magazine assumed an online presence to date.
Currently, the magazine aims at further content diversification by expanding its perspectives to cover art stories from broader parts of Africa as a continent. While upholding key values of Freedom, Authenticity and Community, START envisions an era where African Perspectives of contemporary art exist as a core moment for fundamental artistic reflection on the global stage.
With an Afrocentric stance in mind, START strives towards fronting strong views and unique perspectives not only on relevant topics, but most importantly, unveiling less explored subjects on the continent’s art scene and this is through thematic editions with substantial content in form of interviews, opinions, reviews, academic writing and investigative analysis. START JOURNAL targets artists, art professionals, art promoters and art enthusiasts.
